In past 10 years we have seen a more rapid rate of change with the introduction of Induction lighting and white LEDs.
There has also been a significant rate of improvement within the technology. Discharge lamps were developed in the mid 20th century, and the progression is now mature. We are now witnessing the very speedy development of LED technology. Will it be therefore that all LED lights so far purchased will be obsolete changed for more efficient versions within 10 years?
Well, perhaps. I actually believe that we are still in the "early adopter" phase of this technology and that more change and developments are to come. LED street lights will become a commodity and those that we have now will be superseded at some point in the future.
However, it will plateau and then remain steady for a period of time. Probably shorter than 25 years but by how much I don't know. What I also believe will happen is as in the case of mobile phones, the benefits of using specific products will come in the form of the features that are offered as part of the package.
For example LEDs offer different control options "there is the ability to have more rapid switching. It is here, as in the example of mobile phone technology, where the change will occur. It will be the features provided that persuades the purchaser to buy. I fully anticipate a continuation in the control revolution. The purchasing decision will be less about the lamps per se and more about the package. What does the system offer you? How can this help you to achieve energy reduction and therefore cost savings? Does your system give you the flexibility that you require?
In the immortal words of The Beatles, "You say you want a revolution. Well you know we all want to change the world."
But do we really? Is change for change's sake a good thing and how do we expect people to keep up with what is on offer? One thing is for certain, it will be up to businesses such as ourselves to continue to promote the benefits of the products and to educate our customers about the technology and systems that are available now. We can ensure we keep clients up to date about the potential changes that are on the horizon but at this stage it is virtually impossible to future proof your street lighting. As they say if I could predict the future, well I probably wouldn't be here now.
