After a comprehensive evaluation of Central Management System manufacturers, with a view to installing a street lighting control system countywide as part of its ‘Invest to Save’ program, Cornwall County Council chose Lucy zodion as its preferred supplier. Zodion has worked closely with Urbis Lighting (lantern manufacturers) and SSE Contracting (installation contractors) to complete the project, which began in 2009. It is due for completion in March 2012.
North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC), which is responsible for around 19,000 street lights, was looking for an environmentally friendly, energy saving street lighting system. It called on the expertise of Lucy zodion to help it to choose a system that would meet it needs and provide tangible results.
NELC chose to use Lucy zodion’s Vizion central management system – which uses wireless technology to monitor and control street lighting remotely – to manage a cross section of its street lights as part of a trial. An initial 200 Nodes were fitted to selected street lights in and around the streets of North East Lincolnshire. These Nodes communicate with a Collector, which then feeds data gathered into the Vizion system.
Vizion acts as a communication system for controlling street lighting via the internet. Its also serves as a monitoring tool, so local authorities can see where there may be potential problems with specific lights and produces reports relating to a Council’s lighting stock. This includes providing details about efficiency and energy consumption.
Lucy zodion’s Vizion system enables councils to operate their street lights in the most efficient way whilst at the same time keeping streets safe and well lit for residents. Electricity costs are soaring but at the same time local authorities are under pressure to cut expenditure, therefore reducing energy consumption is no longer just an option, it has become a necessity. The use of a central management system provides a potential long-term solution and NELC is an example of a council that is looking to adopt such technology to achieve significant reductions in energy usage and CO2 emissions.
The trial has so far been a success for NELC. The Vizion Central Management System offers reliability and safety benefits along with providing the Council with greater control over the portion of its lighting stock that has been included in the trial. For example, the remote monitoring and reporting function identifies any faulty lights remotely, so NELC’s lighting inspectors no longer have to patrol the streets on which the trial is taking place on foot at night.
